Florida auto coverage

Florida auto insurance coverage, explained.

What Florida requires, what each coverage does, and what’s worth adding. Your actual policy documents always control, and we’ll walk you through them before you decide.

What Florida requires

To register a vehicle, you need proof of both of these.

$10,000

Personal injury protection (PIP)

Covers 80% of necessary and reasonable medical expenses up to the limit, regardless of who caused the crash.

$10,000

Property damage liability

Pays for damage you or someone driving your car causes to other people’s property.

Keep it going

Continuous coverage

Coverage must stay active even if the car isn’t driven. A lapse can lead to suspension and reinstatement fees.

What to consider adding

The minimums leave real gaps. Here’s what fills them.

Bodily injury liability

Pays for injuries you cause to other people, and for your legal defense in a covered claim.

Worth knowing: most Florida drivers aren’t required to carry it, but without it you could be personally responsible for another person’s medical bills.

Collision

Pays to repair or replace your car after a crash with another vehicle or object, regardless of who’s at fault, minus your deductible.

Worth knowing: it doesn’t cover theft or storm damage. That’s comprehensive.

Comprehensive

Covers damage that isn’t a crash: theft, vandalism, fire, falling objects, hail, flooding, and hitting an animal, minus your deductible.

Worth knowing: in a state with storm season, this one matters. It doesn’t cover crashes or normal wear and tear.

Uninsured / underinsured motorist

Protects you and your passengers if the driver who hits you has no insurance, or not enough.

Worth knowing: you can’t count on the other driver being insured. This is often worth a close look.

Higher medical limits

PIP only goes so far. Additional medical coverage can help with bills beyond the required amount.

Worth knowing: we’ll explain what your limits would actually pay.

Roadside & rental

Optional extras: towing, lockouts, jump-starts, and a rental car while your car is repaired after a covered claim.

Worth knowing: rental and roadside have daily and per-event limits. We’ll tell you what they are.

Common questions

What auto insurance does Florida require?

Florida requires $10,000 of personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 of property damage liability (PDL) to register a vehicle. Bodily injury liability is not required for most drivers. These are minimums, not recommendations, and rules can change, so check flhsmv.gov for the latest.

Is the Florida minimum enough?

It covers the basics: your own medical bills up to a limit, and damage you cause to other people’s property. It does not pay for injuries you cause to others or for repairs to your own car. We’ll show you what to consider and what each option costs.

Do you serve my area?

Yes. We focus on drivers in Miami-Dade and Broward, and we can help anywhere in Florida.

How fast will I hear back?

We'll reach out within one business day of your request. If you ask for a call, we call. If you ask for email, we email.

What happens if my coverage lapses?

Florida can suspend your license plate and driving privilege for a lapse in required coverage, and reinstatement can cost up to $500 in fees. Keep coverage continuous, even on a car you aren’t driving, and talk to us before you cancel anything.

Does asking for a quote commit me to anything?

No. Nothing is bound until you confirm and we confirm in writing.
